Still Life, Then and Now, a historical survey of still life painting, with works spanning over 400 years.
Historically the ‘lowest’ genre of painting within the European tradition, the humble still life has captivated artists, patrons and enthusiasts alike throughout its long history.
Featuring works by the most important protagonists of the genre, our exhibition investigates the enduring appeal and changing meaning of still life from the sixteenth century to today, showing the ways in which our relationships with objects and material goods have altered over time.
The exhibition will include works by historic masters Osias Beert the Elder, Willem Claesz. Heda, Bartolomeo Cavarozzi, Michelangelo Cerquozzi, Giovanni Battista Recco, Sebastian Stoskopff, Antonio Ponce, Francisco de Zurbarán and Anne Vallayer-Coster, nineteenth-century artists Henri Fantin-Latour, Victoria Dubourg, Odilon Redon and Giovanni Segantini, and modernist pioneers Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Pierre Bonnard, Nicolas de Staël, Philip Guston and Andy Warhol, alongside contemporary artists Poppy Jones and Asher Liftin.
