Works on Paper & Paintings, c.1600-1900

Tom Mendel read Theology and the History of Art at Clare College, Cambridge, before going on to run the Picture sales for an auction house in West London. Tom set up Nonesuch in 2020, with the aim of providing high-quality, fully researched and above all interesting pictures to established collectors, institutional collections, and first-time buyers. We offer advice to clients on works coming up for sale, building their collections, and on private sales. The gallery specialises in works on paper from the 16th to 19th centuries; with a focus on landscape & topographical subjects, particularly those relating to ‘The Grand Tour’. We exhibit as part of London Art Week, and will be participating in Master Drawings New York in January 2025.

Tom is the youngest member of the Society of London Art Dealers (SLAD), and was recently featured in FRIEZE as part of a feature on the changing nature and face of the Old Masters market. He has a particular personal interest in paintings on vellum by Northern Italian artists of the 17th century, the work of Charles Percier and his colleagues, and drawings by the Bentveughels and students at the Académie de France à Rome.

Notable institutions to whom we have sold include the following:

THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART, NEW YORK
